You Stay in San Diego — We Handle the Border

The most common question we hear from new clients is: “Do I have to cross the border?” The answer is no. Our entire service is built around the idea that pet owners should not have to navigate international border crossings, foreign streets, or unfamiliar veterinary clinics to get their pet the care they need.

You drop your pet off at a familiar, convenient meeting point in South San Diego. Our coordinator takes over from there — transporting your pet safely across the border, to the clinic, through the appointment, and back to you the same day. You stay in the United States the entire time.

Our Two Meeting Points

North Meeting Point — National City

Walmart Supercenter, 1200 Highland Ave, National City CA 91950

This location is ideal for pet owners coming from central San Diego, North County, or the I-805 corridor. The parking lot is large, well-lit, and easily accessible. The store opens at 6 AM, so you have access to restrooms and amenities while waiting. The I-805 freeway is directly adjacent for easy highway access.

South Meeting Point — Chula Vista

Walmart Supercenter, 75 Broadway, Chula Vista CA 91910

This location is closest to the border and ideal for South Bay residents in Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, San Ysidro, and Otay Ranch. Direct I-5 freeway access makes it easy to reach from most South Bay locations. The store opens at 6 AM. This is our most popular meeting point for repeat clients.

Door-to-Door Service

For pet owners who prefer the convenience of home pickup and drop-off, we offer door-to-door service. Pricing varies by location within San Diego County. This option is particularly popular with clients who have large dogs, multiple pets, or mobility limitations. Contact us at 619-914-2990 for a door-to-door quote.

How Transport Works — Step by Step

  1. Arrival at Meeting Point (7:00-9:00 AM): You arrive at the agreed-upon meeting point with your pet. Our coordinator is already there, identifiable and expecting you. They greet you and your pet, verify appointment details, and collect any records or medications you have brought.
  2. Pet Transfer: Your pet is loaded into our transport vehicle. Dogs ride in secured crates or safety-harnessed in the back seat, depending on size and temperament. Cats ride in carriers. Fresh water is available and the vehicle is climate-controlled.
  3. Border Crossing (South): Our coordinator drives across the border via the San Ysidro or Otay Mesa crossing. Entering Mexico with pets requires a current rabies vaccine for dogs. Our coordinator has all documentation ready and the crossing is typically quick and smooth.
  4. Arrival at Clinic: Your pet is delivered to the veterinary clinic, checked in with the medical team, and the treatment begins. Transport time from meeting point to clinic is approximately 30-45 minutes.
  5. Check-In Call: Once your pet has been examined and the treatment plan is confirmed, you receive a phone call. You speak directly with the treating veterinarian, ask questions, and approve the procedure. This call gives you the same level of involvement you would have if you were standing in the clinic.
  6. Treatment: The veterinary procedure is performed. Whether it is a dental cleaning, tumor removal, MRI scan, or chemotherapy session, your pet receives the full standard of care.
  7. Post-Treatment Monitoring: Your pet is monitored after the procedure until they are stable and alert. For surgeries, this means full recovery from anesthesia. For chemotherapy, this means observation for any immediate reactions.
  8. Checkout Call: You receive a second phone call with complete results, aftercare instructions, medication details, and next-steps recommendations. If follow-up appointments are needed, scheduling is discussed during this call.
  9. Border Crossing (North): Our coordinator drives your pet back across the border to the United States. Dogs need a microchip (ISO 11784/11785) and CDC Dog Import Form ($5, which CBX fills out). Cats have no requirements in either direction.
  10. Reunion at Meeting Point (1:00-4:00 PM): You meet our coordinator at the same meeting point where you dropped off. Your pet is returned to you along with any medications, discharge paperwork, and imaging results (on USB if applicable).

Vehicle Safety and Comfort

Our transport vehicles are specifically set up for pet transport. Here is what that means in practice:

Communication Throughout the Day

Leaving your pet with someone for an entire day is an act of trust. We respect that trust by maintaining clear, consistent communication:

Two guaranteed phone calls: Every appointment includes a check-in call (you speak to the veterinarian) and a checkout call (results and aftercare). These are not optional — they happen for every single appointment.

Text updates: Our coordinators send text message updates at key milestones — arrival at the clinic, start of the procedure, completion, and departure for the return trip.

Your coordinator’s phone number: You have a direct line to your assigned coordinator and can call or text with questions at any time during the day.

Multi-Pet Transport

If you have more than one pet that needs veterinary care, our coordinators can transport multiple animals in the same trip. This is particularly common for:

Multi-pet scheduling may offer scheduling advantages, and each animal still receives individual attention and separate procedure time. Contact us for multi-pet pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cross-Border Pet Transport

What if there is a long wait at the border?

Our coordinators are experienced border crossers who know the best times and lanes to cross. We use SENTRI lanes when available. Even during peak times, your pet is comfortable in a climate-controlled vehicle with water access. Border delays are factored into our scheduling to ensure your pet’s appointment is not affected.

What documents do I need to provide?

For dogs: proof of current rabies vaccination and microchip number (if your dog already has one). For cats: nothing is required. CBX handles the CDC Dog Import Form for the return trip. See our border crossing requirements page for full details.

Can I come along and cross the border with my pet?

Our service is designed so you do not have to cross the border. However, if you prefer to accompany your pet, we can discuss options. Most clients choose to stay at the meeting point or go home and return for pickup.

What if my pet gets carsick?

Let our coordinator know when booking. We can recommend anti-nausea medication to give before the trip, and our coordinators are prepared with supplies to handle car sickness if it occurs.

How early should I arrive at the meeting point?

Arrive at your scheduled time, typically between 7:00-9:00 AM. The exact time is confirmed when you book. Being on time helps us maintain the day’s schedule and ensures your pet’s clinic appointment starts on time.
