How We Vet Our Partner Clinics

Not every veterinary clinic in Tijuana meets our standards. Our vetting process is thorough and ongoing. We do not simply list clinics — we build relationships with specific clinics and specific veterinarians whose skills and standards we have verified firsthand.

Our clinic vetting process evaluates multiple criteria before we send a single patient:

  1. Facility inspection: We physically visit every clinic, inspecting surgical suites, imaging equipment, sterilization protocols, recovery areas, and general cleanliness. The clinic must meet standards consistent with what you would expect from a modern veterinary hospital.
  2. Equipment verification: We confirm the clinic has the specific equipment needed for the procedures we coordinate — modern anesthesia machines with monitoring capabilities, digital X-ray, ultrasound, MRI (where applicable), and current surgical instruments.
  3. Staff credentials: We verify the training and experience of the veterinarians who will treat your pet. Our partner clinics employ specialists or experienced practitioners in oncology, surgery, diagnostic imaging, and dentistry.
  4. Anesthesia protocols: Safe anesthesia is critical. We confirm that clinics use modern anesthetic agents (isoflurane or sevoflurane), multi-parameter monitoring (heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, temperature, capnography), and have emergency drugs and equipment readily available.
  5. Post-operative care: We evaluate recovery areas, staffing ratios, and protocols for monitoring patients after procedures.
  6. Communication capability: Every partner clinic must support our two-call protocol — the check-in call where you speak to the vet, and the checkout call with results and aftercare. This requires English-speaking staff and willingness to participate in our communication model.

What Modern Veterinary Care in Tijuana Looks Like

Many San Diego pet owners have outdated perceptions of veterinary clinics in Mexico. The reality is quite different from what you might imagine. Tijuana’s top veterinary hospitals feature clean, modern facilities with equipment that rivals what you find in San Diego specialty clinics.

Our partner clinics feature:

The medications, surgical implants, and imaging contrast agents used at our partner clinics are manufactured by the same companies that supply US veterinary hospitals. The molecular structure of vincristine, isoflurane, or a titanium bone plate does not change based on which side of the border it is used.

Specialist Types Available

Veterinary Oncology

Our oncology partners treat canine and feline cancers including lymphoma, mast cell tumors, osteosarcoma, hemangiosarcoma, and melanoma. They administer CHOP, COP, LOPP, and single-agent chemotherapy protocols with pre-treatment bloodwork and anti-nausea support.

Veterinary Surgery

Surgical specialists perform orthopedic procedures (TPLO, FHO, fracture repair, luxating patella), tumor removal (wide excision, mastectomy, oral tumors), and soft tissue surgeries. They use the same surgical hardware and techniques as board-certified surgeons in the US.

Diagnostic Imaging

Our imaging partners operate modern MRI systems, CT scanners, digital X-ray, and ultrasound. Radiologists interpret all imaging studies and provide formal written reports with the digital images.

Veterinary Dentistry

Dental care specialists perform full prophylaxis (cleaning, scaling, polishing) with digital dental radiography, extractions, and oral surgery. All dental procedures are performed under general anesthesia with proper monitoring.

Ongoing Quality Monitoring

Our relationship with partner clinics does not end after the initial vetting. We maintain ongoing quality standards through several mechanisms:

Why Multiple Clinics

We partner with multiple clinics rather than a single facility because different procedures require different specializations and equipment. A clinic with the best oncology program may not have MRI capability. A clinic with excellent surgical facilities may not focus on dental care.

By maintaining relationships with several vetted clinics, we can match your pet with the specific specialist and equipment best suited to their condition. Our coordinators know which clinic is strongest for each procedure type and make recommendations accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Clinics

Can I visit the clinic before booking an appointment?

While our service is designed so that you do not need to cross the border, we understand some pet owners want to see the facility first. Contact us to discuss options for a pre-appointment clinic visit if this is important to you.

Do the veterinarians speak English?

Our partner clinics have English-speaking veterinarians who participate in the check-in and checkout phone calls. All written reports and aftercare instructions are provided in English. Our coordinators are bilingual and handle all in-person communication at the clinic.

What happens if there is a complication during treatment?

Our partner clinics are equipped to manage complications. If a complication arises during or immediately after a procedure, the veterinary team addresses it on-site. You are contacted immediately if any complication occurs. For the rare situation requiring extended monitoring, the clinic has the capability to keep your pet longer. Learn more about our safety protocols.

Are the clinics open to treating exotic pets?

Our current service focuses on dogs and cats. We do not currently coordinate care for exotic species, birds, or reptiles. If you have questions about a specific animal type, contact us and we will let you know if we can help.

How many clinics do you partner with?

We maintain relationships with a select number of clinics, each chosen for specific strengths. We do not disclose the exact number or names publicly to maintain our clients’ security and privacy, but we are happy to discuss clinic details when you contact us for an estimate.
